GIANT SQUID
Tsunemi Kubodera, a scientist with Japan's National Science Museum, caught the 24-foot (7-meter) animal near the island of Chichijima, some 600 miles (960 kilometers) southeast of Tokyo. Tools Of The Trade
Altough Egyptian craftsmen generally remained anonymous, a great deal Is known about how they worked because many tombs contain depiction of the entire construction process. Artist work in the service of king, and the government supplied their tools and materials. Common tools included axes, saws, adzes, chisels, moulds, mallets, set squares with plumb lines, level with plumb lines, kilns, brushes and pens made from reed, any pottery wheels. The materials they worked with included clay, paints made from pigments, inks, metals, woods(indigenous and imported), ivory and bone, glass, flax, reeds, wax, leather and stone. To prevent theft, scribes keep account of their tools and materials, including records wear and tear. They even weighed the tools after use to ensure that their precious metals were not being pilfered.

Egyptian carpenters and joiners had a similar range of tools at their disposal. The cutting and piercing tools usually had cooper or bronze blades, fitted into a wooden handle and secured with leather thongs or string. Planks were obtain by sawing tree trunks along their length. Adzes were used for shaping and smoothing, mallets and chisel for cutting joints, and wooden dowels, cramps, and leather thongs for attaching components.

Sacred Script

Ancient Egyptian used a picture based script, the hieroglyph, to record they thoughts. Hieroglyph could be written from left to right, from right to left, or in vertical columns. The direction for reading a set of hieroglyph is determined by the human or animal sign with fronts and backs – this always face the beginning of the inscription. When writing the hieroglyph, the ancient Egyptian omitted vowel sounds, as is done in Arabic and Hebrew today.
From the old kingdom (2686-2181 BCE) onwards, the ancient Egyptian also used hieratic script, a cursive sacred script written by priest in religious and funerary texts. By the letter Pharaonic and Greco-Roman periods, a more rapid cursive script called demotic was used.
Throughout Egypt history, scribes was considered to be the keepers of the literary tradition. In addition to their basic administrative task, scribes edited and revised theological, medical, and magical texts and composed new texts. Scribes used a rectangular case or palette to hold their ink and the reeds they used for writing.

Bust Of Male Statue
3rd intermediate period to late period, 25-26 dynasties, 670-610 BCE
Probably from the area around Memphis, Lower Egypt
This bust can be dated by the smooth double wig the Kushite told(the facial ‘smile’ line from the nose to the mouth) the broad nose and the extremely muscular neck. The absence of back pillar and the slight inclination of the upper body suggest that the bust was once part of scribe’s statue.

Serapeum sphinxes
Ptolemaic period, 300-250bce
Saqqara, Lower Egypt
A sphinx has a lion’s body and a king’s head – an expression of the king’s power as equivalent to the strength and might of a lion. The symbol can be found from the Old kingdom through to the final phases of ancient Egyptian history. The sphinx shown here depict a Ptolemaic king.

Statue of Goddess SekhmetNew
Kingdom, 29th Dynasty, 1410 – 1372 BCE
Kamak, Thebes, Upper Egypt

Derived from the ancient Egyptian word sekhem(“Powerfull”), this lion goddess is an aggressive deity who accompanies the king during war and helps him overcame his enemies. Her hands are showing resting flat on her thighs, her left hand is holding the ankh sign, which symbolizes life.

Elephant statue
Ptolemaic period to roman period, 332 BCE – 395 CE
Probably Alexandria, lower Egypt
During the old kingdom elephants could be hunted in Egypt, but over time this animal moves further south. The sculpture is shown in walking posture to represent motion. There are only two other known large Egyptian elephants statues: one in Aswan, the other in Rome.

Fragmented Statue
New Kingdom, 19th Dynasty, about 1295-1186 BCE
Memphis, lower Egypt

Although Incomplete, this statue can be identified as that of Kha-Em-Wese, son of Ramesses II, because of the inscription. The statue shows his squatting on his haunches, holding a shrine. The hieroglyphs have been cut carefully and polishing had begun, but the figure shows traces of chisel point work and numerous detail are missing.

Colossal head of king
Ptolemaic period, 332 - 222 BCE
Probably Alexandria, Lower Egypt
This head of Ptolemaic ruler, wearing the nemes headcloth with the uraeus snake, was part of a large standing statue, probably about 4 meters high. It could have been part of a pair that stood in front of a temple at Alexandria. The deep eye sockets were probably once inlaid with another coloured material.
